Young VET students creating sustainable digital solutions for the Twin Transition

EDP-VET  Hackathon

The EDP-VET International Hackathon brought together VET students and teachers from Portugal, Spain and Romania to explore the environmental impact of digital technologies and develop creative solutions for a more sustainable digital future.

Through non-formal education, teamwork, workshops and practical challenges, participants transformed the concepts explored in the EDP-VET Training Package into concrete ideas and awareness initiatives supporting the Green and Digital Transition.

The Challenge

.

The Challenge
The EDP-VET International Hackathon challenged students to explore real environmental issues linked to digital technologies and transform them into practical, creative and sustainable solutions. Working from the principles of the Twin Transition, participants reflected on topics such as digital footprint, e-waste, circular economy, responsible use of technology and sustainable digital habits.
International Teams
Students worked in international teams, combining different experiences, perspectives and skills. This collaborative European environment encouraged communication, teamwork, creativity and intercultural learning, while helping participants understand that sustainability challenges require shared solutions and cooperation across borders.
Student Solutions
Throughout the Hackathon, the teams transformed their ideas into concrete proposals designed to promote more sustainable digital behaviours. The solutions combined environmental awareness, digital tools and creativity, demonstrating how VET students can actively contribute to the Green and Digital Transition.

Learning Outcomes
The Hackathon provided participants with an opportunity to learn by doing. Students strengthened their knowledge of sustainable digital practices while developing key transversal competences such as critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, teamwork, communication and leadership in an international learning environment.
From Hackathon to Awareness Campaigns
The Hackathon was not the end of the process. The ideas and solutions developed by students became the starting point for the EDP-VET Awareness Campaigns implemented in the partner countries. Through these campaigns, participants shared what they had learned with other students, teachers and local communities, extending the impact of the project beyond the Hackathon itself.
